US Designates Antifa Groups as Foreign Terrorists

The United States has designated four European Antifa-affiliated groups as global terrorists, signaling an escalation in the Trump administration’s effort to confront what it describes as “Antifa’s campaign of political violence.”

On Thursday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio designated the groups in Germany, Italy, and Greece as “Specially Designated Global Terrorists” (SDGTs). He further announced plans to designate them as “Foreign Terrorist Organizations” (FTOs) starting November 20.

Key Details of the Designation

  • Targeted Groups: Four groups across Germany, Italy, and Greece were targeted, including the German-based Antifa Ost.
  • Justification: Rubio asserted that these groups adhere to “revolutionary anarchist or Marxist ideologies,” including anti-Americanism and anti-capitalism, which they use to “incite and justify violent assaults domestically and overseas.”
  • US Intent: The US warned it would “target other Antifa groups across the globe,” utilizing all available tools to deny funding and resources to those designated.
  • Political Context: The designation follows President Trump’s previous threat to pursue Antifa as a terrorist organization, amid accusations by him and Republican allies that followers of the movement have fomented political violence in US cities like Portland, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
  • Legal Scrutiny: The designation has been met with skepticism from some national security law experts, who question its legal basis given that Antifa (short for anti-fascist) is a decentralized movement with no formal leadership or structure.
