WASHINGTON D.C./HAMILTON, CANADA — US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has characterized the deadly car explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort as a clear act of terrorism, while simultaneously praising India’s handling of the subsequent investigation.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The high-intensity blast, which occurred outside the Red Fort on Monday and claimed at least 13 lives, was formally labeled a “heinous terror incident” by India on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters in Hamilton, Canada, Rubio delivered a strong statement of confidence in New Delhi’s approach:
“Clearly, it was a terrorist attack. It was a car loaded with highly explosive materials that detonated and killed a lot of people… I think the Indians need to be commended. They have been very measured and cautious and very professional in how they’re carrying out this investigation.”
Potential for Broader Risks
Rubio acknowledged the international concern, particularly given the recent four-day confrontation between India and Pakistan in May.
“We’re aware of the potential that it has to become something broader,” Rubio said, but stressed that Washington would wait for the findings of the detailed probe before speculating further on its wider implications.
