Trump Slams Russia’s Nuclear Missile Test, Urges Putin to End Ukraine War

President Donald Trump sharply criticized Russia’s recent test of the nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile, calling the move “inappropriate” and pressing President Vladimir Putin to focus on ending the protracted war in Ukraine.

Speaking to reporters, Trump lashed out at the decision to test the long-range weapon, which is reportedly powered by a small nuclear reactor. “I don’t think it’s an appropriate thing for Putin to be saying either,” Trump stated. “By the way, he ought to get the war ended. A war that should have taken one week is now in its fourth year. That’s what he ought to do instead of testing missiles.”

Trump also minimized the strategic message of the Russian test by underscoring America’s own nuclear power. “They know we have a nuclear submarine — the greatest in the world — right off their shores,” he asserted. “It doesn’t have to go 8,000 miles. We’re not playing games with them, and they’re not playing games with us either.”

Russia’s announcement, made days earlier by Putin, claimed the Burevestnik missile had been successfully tested. Russian news agency TASS quoted Putin as saying the weapon “has no analogues in the world.” Officials claimed the missile had an extended flight time, reportedly covering about 14,000 kilometers (8,700 miles) over 15 hours.

Adding to the tensions, Putin recently signed a law officially terminating a defunct US-Russia agreement that was once meant to limit the production of weapons-grade plutonium.
