US President Donald Trump received a striking public endorsement for the Nobel Peace Prize from Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday, who credited Trump with halting a potential nuclear war between India and Pakistan.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The unexpected exchange took place at the Gaza Peace Summit when Trump interrupted his own address to world leaders to invite Sharif to speak, urging him to “say what you said to me the other day.”
Crediting Trump for Averting Nuclear Conflict
Speaking before world leaders, a visibly moved Sharif lauded Trump as a “man of peace” and a leader the world “needed most.” His most significant claim concerned the May 2025 India-Pakistan conflict:
“Had it not been for this gentleman, who knows—India and Pakistan are both nuclear powers—had he not intervened with his wonderful team during those four days, the war could’ve escalated to a level where no one would have lived to tell what happened.”
Sharif formally nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his “extraordinary efforts to first stop the war between India and Pakistan and then achieve a ceasefire,” alongside his recent mediation efforts in the Middle East.
🇮🇳 India’s Stance
While Pakistan backed the claim that Trump’s intervention averted war, India has consistently maintained its denial of any third-party mediation. New Delhi insists the cessation of hostilities was achieved following direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two countries.
Sharif’s praise follows a similar nomination for the Nobel by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel’s parliament, citing Trump’s role in the Middle East peace agreements and the Gaza ceasefire.
Returning to the podium, Trump responded with characteristic humor: “Wow! I didn’t expect that. Let’s go home—there’s nothing more I have to say. Goodbye everybody.”
