Trump Disses Musk, Hints at Review of Federal Contracts

Trump and Musk’s Feud: A Public Spat Over the “Big Beautiful Bill”

The public dispute between President Donald Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk continues to escalate, largely fueled by Musk’s strong disapproval of Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill.” This legislative package, which includes significant tax cuts and increased military spending, narrowly passed the House of Representatives and now awaits a Senate vote.

In an interview with the New York Post, Trump dismissed Musk’s criticisms, stating, “Nothing catches me by surprise. Nothing.” He opted to discuss his strong polling numbers and the booming economy instead of directly addressing the personal attacks from Musk. Later, aboard Air Force One, Trump signaled no immediate plans to reconcile, saying he wasn’t “thinking about” the Tesla CEO but hoped he would “do well with Tesla.” However, he also mentioned a review of Musk’s “extensive contracts with the federal government,” citing the “lot of subsidy” Musk receives, adding, “only if it’s to be fair for him and for the country.”

The Genesis of the Fallout

The rift became pronounced after Musk stepped down from his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in late May, a position he held as a “special government employee” for 130 days. Despite an initially amicable departure, with Trump commending Musk’s efforts to streamline government and Musk pledging continued advisement, their relationship quickly deteriorated.

Musk launched a series of criticisms on X (formerly Twitter), urging Americans to lobby Congress to “KILL the BILL.” He warned that the legislation would push “America into the fast lane to debt slavery” and called for a new spending bill that avoids a massive increase in the deficit and the debt ceiling. Musk emphasized that a new bill should not increase the national debt by “5 TRILLION DOLLARS.”

What’s at Stake?

Musk’s vocal opposition presents a challenge to Trump’s legislative agenda, particularly as the “Big Beautiful Bill” faces a tight vote in the Senate. The feud has also drawn attention to Musk’s significant federal contracts for companies like SpaceX and Tesla, raising questions about potential repercussions from the Trump administration. The unfolding drama highlights the complex interplay between political power, economic policy, and the influence of prominent figures in both government and technology.
