Trump Confident China Will Work with Him to Stop Fentanyl Flow Ahead of Xi Summit

President Donald Trump, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to South Korea, expressed optimism about his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He announced that fentanyl trafficking would be a central topic of discussion, alongside trade and tariffs.

“China is going to be working with me, okay,” Trump stated. “They’re going to be working with me, and we’re going to do something, I believe.”

The President emphasized the connection between the crisis and border security, referring to the drugs as “tremendous amounts of death.” He also credited his administration’s policies and the work of Border Patrol and ICE for a sharp reduction in illegal drug trafficking by sea, claiming it was “down about 80% by water.” Trump concluded that he expects the meeting to be productive, adding, “a lot of problems are going to be solved.”

Trump Puts Fentanyl at the Center of Xi Talks, Links Crisis to Border Security

During the final leg of his Asia trip, President Donald Trump revealed that the deadly fentanyl crisis will be the top priority in his highly anticipated face-to-face meeting with China’s Xi Jinping.

Trump stressed that China must cooperate to curb the flow of the synthetic opioid. “China is going to be working with me, and we’re going to do something, I believe,” he told reporters. He stated that the issue would be a major focus of the talks, along with trade and tariffs.

Connecting the international issue to his domestic agenda, the President drew a stark line between the fentanyl crisis and his calls for strict border enforcement. He claimed “tremendous amounts of death” flowed in under open border policies and asserted that his own policies have been effective, resulting in an “about 80% by water” reduction in drug trafficking. Trump looks forward to the meeting, predicting a “very happy” outcome.
