Travel Alert: TSA PreCheck & Global Entry Suspended

As of 6:00 AM ET today, February 22, 2026, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has officially pulled the plug on expedited screening nationwide. This “emergency measure” is a result of the ongoing partial government shutdown that began on Valentine’s Day.

What is changing?

If you have a “Trusted Traveler” status, your usual perks are effectively on ice until the shutdown ends:

  • Back to Basics: All travelers—including those with PreCheck—must use the standard security lanes.
  • The “Full” Experience: Expect to take off your shoes, remove your 3-1-1 liquids, and pull your laptop out of your bag.
  • Customs Delays: Global Entry kiosks are being bypassed in favor of standard CBP processing lines for all international arrivals.
  • No VIP Escorts: DHS has also suspended airport police escorts for members of Congress to keep more officers on the front lines.

Why is this happening?

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated the suspension is necessary to “prioritize the general traveling population” as the department operates without a budget.

The standoff in Congress centers on a funding dispute over immigration enforcement, with the shutdown now entering its second week. While roughly 95% of TSA agents are still on the job as “essential” staff, they are currently working without pay.

Pro-Tips for Your Trip

  1. Arrive Early: Standard lines are already swelling. Experts recommend at least 3 hours for domestic and 4 hours for international flights.
  2. Pack Light: Since you’ll be using standard screening, double-check that your carry-on is “standard-lane friendly” to avoid bag searches that slow everyone down.
  3. Check for Weather: A significant winter storm is hitting the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic today, which—combined with the security changes—is a recipe for major delays.
