The fire broke out at approximately 1:30 a.m. at Le Constellation, a high-end venue in the resort town of Crans-Montana. Witnesses described a sudden explosion followed by a rapid spread of flames that trapped many of the 100+ guests inside.
Casualties and Response
Local authorities in the canton of Valais have confirmed a grim toll:
- Fatalities: Multiple deaths have been confirmed, though official counts are still being finalized.
- Injuries: At least 40 individuals were injured. Many suffer from severe burns and smoke inhalation; several remain in critical condition.
- Emergency Action: A massive rescue operation involving helicopters and alpine emergency teams was launched immediately, transporting victims to specialized trauma centers across Switzerland.
Investigation into the Cause
While the official investigation is in its preliminary stages, early reports point toward a potential pyrotechnics mishap. It is believed that indoor fireworks or “cold sparks” used during the midnight countdown may have ignited decorative materials on the ceiling.
“The scene was one of total chaos. People were trying to escape through windows as the smoke became unbearable,” said one witness. “It happened so fast—in a matter of seconds, the room was black.”
Support for Families
The Valais Cantonal Police have set up a crisis center in Crans-Montana to support victims’ families and assist with the identification process. A dedicated emergency hotline has been established for those seeking information on missing loved ones.
