U.S. tariffs are hitting fertilizer shipments hard, according to The Mosaic Company, a leading producer of key crop fertilizers. The company reported that phosphate deliveries to the U.S. are “tracking well below last year” because of these tariffs.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! This has had a direct impact on Mosaic’s finances, leading to an $8 million loss in its phosphate earnings for the second quarter. The lower shipment volumes also contributed to the company missing analyst sales estimates for both phosphate and potash.
Interestingly, not all fertilizers are affected equally. Potash, which is largely produced in Canada, is exempt from U.S. tariffs under a North American trade agreement. This exemption helped Mosaic’s potash sales rise from the previous year, offsetting some of the losses from phosphate.
Mosaic’s report also shed light on other market pressures, including falling corn and soybean prices, which are leaving farmers with less money to spend on nutrients. Despite these challenges, the company remains optimistic, expecting a strong rebound in 2026 as nutrients removed from this year’s crops will need to be replenished.
Following the news, Mosaic’s shares slumped more than 6%, reflecting investor concerns about the company’s performance.
