| 11th – 20th of the month | Wednesday, May 20, 2026 |
| 21st – 31st of the month | Wednesday, May 27, 2026 |
The Two Major Exceptions
Not everyone follows the birthday rule. You received your payment on Friday, May 1, 2026, if:
- You receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
- You started receiving your Social Security benefits before May 1997 (or you receive both Social Security and SSI).
Note: While these exceptions are usually paid on the 1st and 3rd of the month, May 3rd fell on a Sunday this year. By law, the SSA moves these payments to the preceding business day.
How Payments Are Delivered
By law, nearly all federal benefits must be paid electronically. Your monthly benefit will automatically be:
- Deposited directly into your bank account, OR
- Loaded onto a Direct Express Debit Mastercard.
If you are still receiving paper checks by mail, you are in the minority and should consider switching to direct deposit to avoid delivery delays.
What to Do If Your Payment Is Late
If your designated payment date has passed and your funds haven’t arrived, the SSA requests that you wait three business days before calling their customer service line at 1-800-772-1213.
