The slide occurred Tuesday morning near Frog Lake, an area northwest of Lake Tahoe. A backcountry expedition—comprised of guides and clients from Blackbird Mountain Guides—was caught in the path of the snow while returning from a multi-day trek.
The Rescue Effort
Despite a relentless winter storm, rescuers from several counties mobilized to reach the site.
- Medical Status: Of the six survivors found, two were hospitalized with serious injuries, while four others were treated for trauma and cold-weather exposure.
- The Missing: Search teams are desperately trying to locate nine additional individuals. The total count of the group was recently clarified by authorities to be 15 people.
- Severe Obstacles: Operation crews are facing “whiteout” conditions and over 30 inches of fresh snow. With wind gusts and continued heavy accumulation, the risk of “reloading”—where the slope becomes unstable again—remains a constant threat to the rescuers themselves.
