A massive search and rescue operation is underway in the eastern Aegean today after a high-speed collision between a Greek Coast Guard vessel and a migrant boat claimed at least 15 lives late Tuesday night.

The incident unfolded under the cover of darkness near Mirsinidi Beach. According to official reports:
- The Approach: Coast Guard officials spotted a speedboat moving without navigation lights.
- The Maneuver: After allegedly ignoring signals to halt, the speedboat made a sharp turn, resulting in a direct impact with the patrol ship.
- The Aftermath: The speedboat capsized immediately, throwing nearly 40 people into the water.
Casualties and Survival
While the numbers are still being finalized, the current toll highlights the severity of the crash:
- Fatalities: 15 confirmed dead (11 men and 4 women).
- Rescued: 24 individuals pulled from the water, including 11 children.
- Injuries: Survivors are being treated on the island of Chios for severe trauma, including internal injuries. Two Coast Guard members were also hurt in the collision.
