Russia Unleashes Massive Attack, Plunging Millions of Ukrainians into Cold and Darkness

Millions of Ukrainians are enduring bitter cold and widespread darkness following what Ukrainian officials describe as one of Russia’s largest direct ballistic missile attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure since the war began.

The scale of the damage has necessitated immediate emergency power cuts across almost all regions, and authorities warn that full restoration will take time. People in Kyiv, for instance, were scheduled to be without electricity for 10-12 hours at a time over the weekend.

Civilian Struggle and Adaptation

As temperatures drop to single digits Celsius, the repeated targeting of energy facilities forces drastic measures:

  • Widespread Rationing: Power supply is being heavily rationed across the country.
  • Adaptation: Ukrainians now schedule their lives—including cooking and homework—around planned outages. Diesel generators have become a common, yet expensive, necessity.
  • Fear and Mobility: Many elderly people are afraid to leave their homes, fearing they could get stuck without working lifts during a power cut.
  • Economic Impact: The attacks have also seriously damaged Ukrainian gas production, requiring the country to turn to costly European gas imports to cover the shortfall.

Military Details and Casualties

The overnight attack, which came as people slept, struck nine Ukrainian regions:

  • Civilian Toll: At least 15 civilians were killed by Russian strikes over the weekend. A drone strike on a nine-story apartment building in Dnipro killed three people and injured 12.
  • Weapons Used: Russia launched 45 missiles (including ballistic weapons) and an estimated 450 drones.
  • Air Defense Gap: Ukrainian air defenses intercepted only nine of the 45 missiles. President Zelensky stressed that countering sophisticated ballistic and aero-ballistic missiles is extremely difficult and requires many more advanced systems, such as the US-made Patriot batteries.

Russia’s defense ministry claimed the strikes targeted military-industrial and energy facilities in response to recent Ukrainian attacks.

Reciprocal Strikes

While struggling defensively, the Ukrainian military has stepped up its own drone and missile attacks against Russian infrastructure, hitting refineries, pipelines, and pumping stations. On Saturday, Ukrainian drones carried out a “massive attack” on energy facilities in Russia’s Volgograd region, temporarily knocking out a substation.

Despite the severe damage, Energy Minister Svitlana Grynchuk insisted: “Despite the enemy’s plans, Ukraine will have light and heat this winter.”
