Of the four Typhoon jets recently stationed in Qatar, two have been specifically assigned to a “quick reaction” role for Bahrain. Their primary mission is the detection and interception of incoming unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Escalating Threat to Infrastructure
The deployment comes in the wake of a significant security breach two nights ago. Iranian drones successfully struck fuel storage tanks at Bahrain’s international airport, causing substantial damage and highlighting the vulnerability of the island nation’s critical infrastructure.
Defense by the Numbers
Bahraini defense officials have provided a stark look at the scale of the aerial campaign against them since the conflict began:
- 190 Drones intercepted to date.
- 114 Missiles shot down.
The “SHORAD” Gap
While Bahrain’s primary air defenses have handled the bulk of these interceptions, officials are sounding the alarm over a specific tactical weakness. There is currently an urgent requirement for Short Range Air Defence (SHORAD) systems.
These specialized units are necessary to counter low-altitude “suicide” drones that can occasionally slip past traditional, long-range missile batteries.
