Qualcomm (QCOM) is making a major power play in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) market. The company’s shares surged 11% following the announcement that it is launching the new AI200 and AI250 chips to directly challenge the data center dominance of Nvidia and AMD.

Qualcomm’s New AI Strategy
The company is not targeting the resource-intensive process of AI training, which is currently Nvidia’s stronghold. Instead, it is laser-focused on AI inference—the process of running already trained AI models (like chatbots and generative AI) at scale.
Qualcomm’s key competitive features are:
- Low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO): The new chips are engineered for superior power efficiency, resulting in a lower TCO for data center builders struggling to manage escalating energy costs.
- The Hexagon NPU Advantage: The AI chips leverage Qualcomm’s custom Hexagon NPU (neural processing unit) technology, which has been proven in its mobile and Windows PC processors and is now scaled up for the data center.
- Rack-Scale Offering: Qualcomm is offering its chips as individual accelerators or as part of a complete rack-scale server solution, complete with a Qualcomm CPU.
The AI Chip Roadmap
The company has laid out an aggressive, multi-year plan with an annual cadence:

Despite facing heavy competition from Nvidia, AMD, and in-house efforts by cloud giants like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, Qualcomm believes its focus on cost-efficient, low-power inference will allow it to carve out a significant claim in the lucrative data center market.
