Prime Minister Narendra Modi, from Jharsuguda, Odisha, has inaugurated Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s (BSNL) completely indigenous 4G network, marking a colossal step for the Digital India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat missions.

The monumental rollout, which coincides with BSNL’s silver jubilee, instantly places India in a select group of nations capable of manufacturing its own cutting-edge telecom equipment.

Key Infrastructure & Technology Milestones

  • Massive Scale: PM Modi commissioned over 97,500 mobile towers across the country, including 92,600 4G sites, built at a cost of approximately ₹37,000 crore.
  • Homegrown Power: This is a fully ‘Swadeshi’ (indigenous) 4G stack—developed by a consortium led by Indian companies.
    • The Core Network was developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT).
    • The Radio Access Network (RAN) was provided by Tejas Networks.
    • The entire system was integrated by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).
  • Future-Ready: The cloud-based network is designed for seamless upgradation to 5G, securing India’s digital future.
  • Green Telecom: The deployment features solar-powered towers, making it one of the country’s largest clusters of sustainable telecom infrastructure.

Impact on Connectivity and Economy

This initiative will significantly bridge the digital divide:

  • Rural Reach: It will connect over 26,700 previously unserved villages, including remote and Left-Wing Extremism-affected areas.
  • New Subscribers: The network expansion is projected to add over 20 lakh new subscribers to the digital ecosystem.
  • Confidence & Growth: Hailed as a symbol of India’s journey “from dependence to confidence,” the indigenous stack is set to boost domestic jobs, increase technology exports, and aid BSNL’s fiscal revival.
  • Regional Vision: PM Modi simultaneously announced plans for a semiconductor park in resource-rich Odisha, stressing its role as a hub for future growth.

This historic launch reinforces India’s commitment to technological self-reliance while extending high-speed connectivity to the last mile.
