The name change is set to formally take effect on July 1, 2026. While the “PBI” airport code—which is managed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA)—is expected to remain the same for logistical consistency, all physical branding and navigational references will be updated.
Legislative and Financial Overview
- Legislative Approval: The renaming was driven by House Bill 919, which cleared the Florida House (81-30) and the Senate (25-11) earlier this year.
- Funding: The Florida Senate has earmarked $2.75 million to cover the costs associated with the transition. These funds will be used for new highway signage, terminal branding, and the updating of state and local records.
- FAA Coordination: While the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) does not dictate airport names, they are currently coordinating with the state to update federal navigational charts and databases.
Intellectual Property and Royalties
The Trump Organization has moved to secure trademark rights for the new name and potential abbreviations (such as “DJT”) for use on merchandise and apparel. However, the organization clarified in a statement that the Trump family will receive no royalties or financial compensation from the airport’s use of the name.
A Growing “Trump District”
The airport renaming is part of a broader effort to honor the former president in the vicinity of his Mar-a-Lago residence. This move follows the January 2026 renaming of the primary thoroughfare connecting the airport to the estate, now known as President Donald J. Trump Boulevard.
