The Standoff on the 8th Floor

The incident unfolded around 5:30 p.m. in the Park Slope facility. According to the NYPD, a man who had been admitted as a patient the day prior became aggressive, barricading himself inside a room on the eighth floor.

At the time of the barricade, a hospital security guard and an elderly patient were also inside the room. Witnesses reported the suspect was making death threats against hospital staff.

Escalation and Response

When officers arrived, they attempted to de-escalate the situation through a closed door, repeatedly ordering the man to surrender his weapon—described as a “self-made” sharp object.

The situation turned fatal following these specific actions:

  • Failed Subdual: Officers deployed Tasers twice in an attempt to stop the man without lethal force, but neither attempt was effective.
  • The Charge: The suspect reportedly lunged at officers with the weapon, prompting them to discharge their firearms.
  • Outcome: The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Current Status

The NYPD has released images of the bloody, improvised weapon recovered from the room. While the elderly patient was unharmed, the security guard involved was treated by medical staff. The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is currently reviewing body-camera footage of the shooting to ensure protocol was followed.
