Minneapolis Tensions Explode Following Fatal Shooting of Nurse by Federal Agents

MINNEAPOLIS — A wave of civil unrest has gripped Minneapolis after federal immigration agents shot and killed Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse and U.S. citizen. The incident, occurring during a controversial “Operation Metro Surge” crackdown, has ignited a fierce legal and political battle between Minnesota leadership and the federal government.

The Shooting: Conflicting Accounts

On Saturday morning, federal agents engaged in a targeted operation on the city’s South Side. The encounter turned fatal within minutes:

  • The Federal Claim: DHS officials allege Pretti approached agents with a firearm and “violently resisted” arrest, forcing agents to use lethal force in self-defense.
  • The Video Evidence: Bystander footage tells a different story. Videos appear to show Pretti—a lawful gun owner with a valid permit—holding a phone while trying to assist a woman shoved by agents. Footage shows him being pepper-sprayed and tackled before being shot multiple times while pinned to the ground.
  • The Victim: Pretti was a highly regarded registered nurse at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System with no prior criminal record.

A City Under Siege

The death of Pretti marks the second time this month a U.S. citizen has been killed by immigration agents in the city, following the death of Renee Good on January 7.

  • Mass Protests: Hundreds of demonstrators blocked streets with dumpsters and debris, demanding the immediate withdrawal of federal forces.
  • Violent Clashes: Federal agents deployed tear gas, flashbangs, and batons to disperse crowds. Reports indicate at least one agent was injured during the melee.
  • National Guard Deployment: Governor Tim Walz has activated the Minnesota National Guard to restore order as the city remains on edge.

Political Standoff

The incident has sparked a “turf war” over who has the right to investigate the killing.

“This is an absolute abomination,” said Governor Tim Walz, who is demanding the removal of federal officers from the state.

While state investigators attempted to process the scene with a search warrant, federal agents reportedly blocked their access. Meanwhile, Mayor Jacob Frey is pursuing a temporary restraining order to legally halt all federal immigration operations within city limits.

In response, federal officials have doubled down, accusing local leaders of “inciting insurrection” and failing to protect law enforcement.
