The Incident

The attack occurred around 5:20 p.m. in the community of Loma de Flores. According to witnesses, several armed men arrived in two pickup trucks and opened fire indiscriminately on players and spectators just as the match was concluding.

Ten victims were pronounced dead at the soccer field, while an eleventh died shortly after arriving at a local hospital. The 12 wounded individuals, which include a woman and a minor, are currently receiving medical treatment.

Regional Context & Response

Salamanca Mayor Cesar Prieto has officially requested federal intervention from President Claudia Sheinbaum, citing an escalating “crime wave.” The region has become a flashpoint for violence due to a territorial dispute between:

  • The Santa Rosa de Lima cartel.
  • The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

This shooting was not the only act of violence in the area this weekend; just hours prior, local authorities discovered four bags containing human remains in a separate part of the city.

Ongoing Investigation

Members of the National Guard and the Mexican Army have established a security perimeter and are conducting searches across the state. As of Monday, January 26, the perpetrators remain at large, and no motive has been officially confirmed.
