What Happened?

On May 8, 2026, a helicopter touched down in Rosener Park—right across from a basketball court where kids were playing, and just feet from local homes. The plan was a full-blown photo shoot followed by a flyover backdrop. However, Markham police quickly swarmed the scene, shutting down the operation before the chopper could take off for the flyover.

The Conflict of Interest

The spectacle instantly raised eyebrows, spinning into a heated debate over safety and the potential misuse of public funds:

  • The Invoice: Court documents revealed that the pilot’s contract explicitly listed the Markham Park District as the customer and payee for the $800 ride.
  • The Defense: Brown fiercely denied using taxpayer money, asserting that she paid the bill using her personal credit card.
  • The Permit: City officials found that the only written permission allowing a helicopter to land on public property was an April 13 authorization letter that Brown had signed herself in her capacity as park director. Brown later claimed she didn’t realize she needed city-level clearance.

The City of Markham did not take the stunt lightly, citing severe safety risks to the neighborhood.

  • Fines: Both Brown and the pilot were slapped with police citations for disorderly conduct and unauthorized landing.
  • Lawsuit: Taking it a step further, the City of Markham officially filed a lawsuit against Brown over the incident.

Despite the viral outrage and legal trouble, Brown told local news outlets that she didn’t understand “all of the fuss.” She stated she just wanted a memorable graduation experience for her daughter, adding that she was simply glad her daughter loved the photos.
