If you’re waiting to file these forms online, you’ll need to hold on a bit longer. The tax department is expected to enable online filing for ITR-2 and ITR-3 soon, possibly even this week.
In the meantime, you can download the Excel utility for ITR-2 or ITR-3, fill in all your details, and then generate a JSON file. This JSON file can then be uploaded to the income-tax portal to submit your return. For those who find this process daunting, it’s often best to get help from a tax-filing expert, like a chartered accountant.
Will This Delay Affect Taxpayers?
No, this delay in online filing for ITR-2 and ITR-3 isn’t likely to cause any issues for taxpayers. The Income Tax Department has already extended the last date to file ITR for those whose accounts don’t need to be audited from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025. This gives you nearly two months, which should be plenty of time once the online facilities are up and running.
What Can You File Now?
Currently, you can file ITR-1 and ITR-4 forms both online and through their respective Excel utilities. As of July 14, 2025, over 1.2 crore taxpayers have already filed ITR-2 and ITR-3 for AY 2025-26 (FY 2024-25). Of these, 1.19 crore returns have been verified, and more than 96 lakh verified returns have already been processed by the Income Tax Department.
