- The Crime: Thieves slashed the tonneau cover of Edmonds’ truck to gain access to the bed.
- The Loss: The primary item stolen was Maya’s personal paddleboard, a possession that holds deep sentimental value as the family prays for her recovery.
Maya’s Current Status
Maya was one of the two students critically injured during the February 10 attack. Despite the trauma of the shooting and this recent theft, there are small glimmers of hope:
- Medical Milestone: Maya’s father, David Gebala, reported that she has begun taking some breaths on her own and showing increased physical movement.
- The “Healing Room”: The family is currently transforming Maya’s hospital room with cards and decorations from the community, hoping to provide a “room full of love” for the moment she regains consciousness.
Community Context
This theft adds a layer of “unimaginable cruelty” to a family already reeling from the actions of 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, who claimed nine lives in the community.
The Tumbler Ridge Victim Support Fund continues to grow as the town rallies around the survivors. While the physical board is gone, the outpouring of support for Maya remains the family’s primary focus.
