Today, Hoddle Headquarters pauses to mourn the passing of Donna Jean Godchaux, the distinctive backing vocalist for the Grateful Dead.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Godchaux joined the Grateful Dead in 1971 with her husband, Keith Godchaux, lending her voice throughout the band’s most seminal period. She was there for Europe ’72, under the full moon in Egypt, and, most famously, at Barton Hall in 1977. Her inclusion added a fresh, soaring layer to the Grateful Dead’s sound during their biggest era—the time between Ron McKernan’s death and before Brent Mydland arrived with a harder, keyboard-driven sound.
Many of my favorite live Dead tracks are defined by her contributions—think The Music Never Stopped, Dancing in the Street, or, of course, Playing in the Band, the jammiest cut in the Dead’s catalog, often shaped by her soaring wails.
I was just at a Grateful Dead cover band concert on Sunday night. As they played their rendition of “Scarlet Begonias” into “Fire on the Mountain,” I began to ponder if the Grateful Dead had achieved its so-called telos on May 8, 1977, when they first paired those two songs together.
The idea of telos, first explored by Aristotle, asks what the ultimate and intended reason for an object’s existence is. It’s probably silly to apply it to a rock band, but I’ll do it anyway. When the Dead paired Scarlet > Fire, I think it’s reasonable to ask if they reached the ultimate objective of their existence: fusing the rock fusion of Scarlet Begonias with the reggae-like groove of Fire on the Mountain. The space that connects the two is like a transition through an interdimensional portal.
During that legendary version, you can hear Donna Jean Godchaux’s soft wails in the background, guiding the audience from the first song into the second before Phil Lesh’s boppy bass carries us into the latter half of one of the band’s most legendary outputs.
If the Grateful Dead did indeed reach telos at Barton Hall, then Godchaux guided us all there.
May the four winds blow her safely home.
