A routine child custody exchange turned into a deadly confrontation Friday morning in Mint Hill, North Carolina. The incident, which unfolded in a busy shopping center, left the suspect dead and two law enforcement officers hospitalized.

The Confrontation

The violence began around 10:47 a.m. at an Edible Arrangements storefront on Matthews-Mint Hill Road. Officers from the Mint Hill Police Department were on-site to facilitate the exchange when a male suspect drew a firearm and began shooting.

A heavy exchange of gunfire followed as officers returned fire to neutralize the threat.

Outcome and Status

  • The Suspect: The unidentified male shooter was struck during the gun battle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Law Enforcement: Two officers sustained gunshot wounds. After being rushed to a nearby trauma center in critical condition, medical staff have since upgraded their status to stable.

Current Investigation

The scene remained cordoned off for several hours as investigators processed evidence. As per protocol for shootings involving law enforcement, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has assumed control of the case.
