Glasgow Central Remains Closed as Historic Building Faces "Uncontrolled Collapse"

GLASGOW – Scotland’s busiest transport hub remains at a standstill following a catastrophic fire that has left a neighboring Victorian landmark on the brink of structural failure. Glasgow Central Station has been shuttered since Sunday after a blaze, originating in a Union Street vape shop, gutted the B-listed “Union Corner” building.

Current Status: “Uncontrolled Collapse”

The City Council has issued a stark warning, stating that the remaining facade of the 1851 Orr and Sons building is in a state of “ongoing and uncontrolled collapse.” Because the station sits directly adjacent to this unstable structure, exclusion zones remain in place for public safety.

Impact on Rail Services

Network Rail and ScotRail have confirmed that disruption will persist for several days. Key details for Tuesday include:

  • High-Level Platforms: Completely closed. No trains are arriving or departing.
  • Low-Level Platforms: Trains are running through the station but will not stop. Passengers must use Argyle Street or Anderston stations instead.
  • Regional & Cross-Border: All services on the West Coast Mainline and routes throughout Central Scotland are heavily impacted.

The Recovery Effort

While the station building itself is thought to have escaped major fire damage, safety inspections cannot begin until the site is handed over by the fire service.

“When the response moves into the recovery stage, our engineers will inspect the station to assess any damage,” said Ross Moran, Network Rail Scotland’s route director. He expressed immense gratitude to the 250 firefighters who worked around the clock to contain the inferno.

Advice for Passengers

ScotRail’s Chief Operating Officer, David Ross, urged travelers to remain patient and check the ScotRail app or website before attempting to travel.

  • Alternative Hub: Passengers traveling to Edinburgh or Northern Scotland should use Glasgow Queen Street.
  • Staff Safety: Officials have requested that the public be patient with station staff working under “very difficult circumstances.”
