Former US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo has issued a strong warning against President Donald Trump’s foreign and trade policies, arguing that the United States is alienating key global allies and making a big mistake with India.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Speaking at the Harvard Kennedy School, Raimondo—who served under President Joe Biden—sharply criticized Trump’s approach:
- America Alone: She described the “America First” strategy as “America Alone,” calling it a “disastrous policy” that weakens US global standing. “The Trump administration has pissed off all our allies,” she stated.
- India Tensions: Raimondo explicitly warned, “We’re making a big mistake with India.” Her comments come as US-India trade tensions have escalated, with the Trump administration having doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50% and imposed new duties over India’s continued purchase of Russian crude oil.
- Hubris and Global Competition: Raimondo cautioned against American “hubris,” stressing that the world won’t wait for Washington to mend its alliances. She pointed out that rivals like China are actively engaging with partners in Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.
- Need for Strong Alliances: She urged a return to diplomacy and strong relationships, stating that the US “cannot be effective without strong relationships with Europe or much of Southeast Asia.”
In a final point, Raimondo also voiced disagreement with the idea of reshoring all manufacturing—a position held by both Trump and Biden—arguing, “We don’t have enough labour, it’s not where we have an advantage, and it’s not critical to our national security.”
