Struggling to remember your Income Tax e-filing portal password? You’re not alone! Many taxpayers face this common hurdle, especially since ITR filing is typically an annual task. But don’t sweat it – you can still file your Income Tax Return (ITR) even if those credentials have slipped your mind.
File ITR Using Net Banking (No Portal Password Needed!)
One of the easiest ways to bypass the forgotten password issue is to use your bank’s net banking service. Most major Indian banks offer a direct link to the Income Tax Department’s e-filing services. This means you can access essential ITR functionalities without logging into the official IT portal with your forgotten password.
Here’s a general rundown of how it works, using ICICI Bank as an example:
- Log in to your internet banking account with your bank’s user ID and password.
- Navigate to the “Payments and Transfers” section.
- Look for and select an option like “Manage Your Taxes” or similar.
- Choose “Income Tax e-Filing.”
You’ll then be securely redirected to the Income Tax Department’s website (https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in). From there, you can utilize services such as Quick e-File ITR, Upload Return, View Form 26AS, Tax Calculator, Download ITR, and E-Pay Tax.
Just a heads-up: While you won’t need your IT portal password, you might need to verify your mobile number and email ID using One-Time Passwords (OTPs) registered with the income tax website. Many other banks, including HDFC Bank and SBI, offer similar convenient options.
Reset Your E-filing Portal Password (If You Prefer Direct Login)
If you’d rather regain direct access to the e-filing portal, you have several straightforward options to reset your password:
- Using Aadhaar OTP: If your mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar, you can receive an OTP to reset your password.
- Via Digital Signature Certificate (DSC): If you have an active DSC registered with the e-filing portal, you can use it to reset.
- Through e-Filing OTP: Get OTPs on both your registered mobile number and email ID to verify and set a new password.
- Using Bank Account / Demat Account EVC: If your bank or demat account is pre-validated and EVC-enabled, an Electronic Verification Code (EVC) can be used.
Important Reminder for ITR Filing (FY 2024-25, AY 2025-26)
The deadline for filing your ITR for the Financial Year 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26) has been extended to September 15, 2025. Make sure you review any changes to the ITR forms and submit the correct one before the deadline to avoid any penalties.
