- Switch browsers: Use the latest versions of Chrome or Edge for a more seamless experience.
- Use Incognito/Private mode: This can help bypass local browser-related issues.
- Disable extensions: Temporarily turn off any ad blockers or privacy-focused add-ons.
- Update your browser: Ensure you are using the most recent version available.
- Try a different network: If issues persist, switch to another Wi-Fi connection or a mobile hotspot.
What Happens If You Miss the Deadline?
Failing to file your ITR today could lead to significant financial penalties and complications:
- Late Fee: You may face a penalty of up to Rs 5,000. For those with a total income below Rs 5 lakh, the fee is capped at Rs 1,000.
- Interest on Unpaid Tax: Interest may be charged on any outstanding tax dues.
- Delayed Refunds: If you are due a refund, it will be delayed.
- Loss of Benefits: You won’t be able to carry forward certain losses from the current financial year to future years.
- New Tax Regime: For individuals with business or professional income, filing a belated return means you will be locked into the new tax regime by default, losing the option to switch.
Why You Should File, Even with Low Income
Even if your income is below the taxable threshold, filing an ITR is beneficial. It helps establish a clear financial record, allows you to claim any Tax Deducted at Source (TDS), and can be essential when applying for loans or visas.
The department urges all taxpayers to complete their filing promptly and to rely only on official communication channels for updates.
