- The Weapon: The man reportedly used a makeshift weapon—a sharpened piece of porcelain from a shattered toilet—to cut himself.
- The Hostage Situation: The individual barricaded himself inside a room, holding an elderly patient and a hospital staff member against their will.
The Police Confrontation
When NYPD officers arrived on the 8th floor, they encountered a room covered in blood. According to official reports, the officers spent several minutes attempting to talk the man down, repeatedly asking him to drop the sharp object.
When de-escalation tactics failed and the man lunged at the officers, the following occurred:
- Non-Lethal Attempt: Officers deployed Tasers twice, but the man was not subdued.
- Lethal Force: As the man continued to advance, officers fired their service weapons, striking him in the chest.
Aftermath and Investigation
Despite immediate medical intervention within the hospital, the man was pronounced dead shortly after. No hospital staff, officers, or the elderly bystander were injured in the fray.
The NYPD Force Investigation Division is now leading the inquiry. They are currently reviewing body camera footage to determine if the use of lethal force complied with department protocols for mental health crises in clinical settings.
