Family of Slain Hindu Man in Bangladesh Rejects Blasphemy Claims, Demands Death Penalty

The family of Dipu Chandra Das, a 27-year-old Hindu man who was brutally lynched in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district, has broken their silence. In an exclusive interview with India Today, Dipu’s brother, Apu Das, addressed the “false” allegations of blasphemy and called for the harshest possible punishment for the perpetrators.

“Completely False” Allegations

Apu Das firmly refuted the rumors that triggered the mob violence. He maintained that his brother, who worked as a supervisor in a sweater factory, was a man of integrity who would never make inappropriate religious remarks.

“My brother was not the kind of person who would ever say or do such a thing. We do not believe these accusations even for a second,” Apu stated.

The Brutal Reality of the Attack

The incident, which occurred on a Thursday night inside the factory premises, has sent shockwaves through the region. While initial rumors suggested a spontaneous mob, investigations by Bangladesh’s Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have revealed a more calculated horror:

  • Betrayal at Work: Reports indicate factory supervisors allegedly forced Dipu to resign before handing him over to an enraged mob.
  • Extreme Violence: After the assault, the mob reportedly hung his body on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and set it on fire.
  • No Evidence: Authorities have confirmed that no evidence was found to support the blasphemy claims used to justify the killing.

A Demand for Capital Punishment

Despite receiving support from local leaders and neighbors, Apu Das emphasized that “nothing could compensate for the loss.” He has made a singular demand to the Bangladeshi government: the death penalty.

“I want the death penalty for those who brutally murdered my brother. Nothing else will give us peace,” he said, insisting that all those captured on CCTV footage must be executed.

Current Status of the Investigation

The Muhammad Yunus-led interim government has officially condemned the act, labeling it a “brutal killing” and promising that no one involved will be spared.
