E-Verification of ITR: The Final Step to a Valid Tax Return

E-verifying your Income Tax Return (ITR) is a crucial, final step after filing. For those who filed by the September 16, 2025 deadline, you must e-verify your return within 30 days to ensure it’s considered valid. If you fail to do so, your ITR will be treated as if you never filed it.

Why E-verify?

E-verification is the online process of confirming your ITR. It’s the official acknowledgment that you’ve filed correctly, and it’s mandatory for the Income Tax Department to process your return, including any refunds you may be due.

How to E-verify Your ITR

There are several straightforward methods to e-verify your return, so you can choose the one that works best for you.

  • Aadhaar OTP: The most common method. An OTP is sent to the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar.
  • Net Banking: You can verify your return directly through your bank’s net banking portal.
  • Electronic Verification Code (EVC): This code can be generated through a pre-validated bank or demat account.
  • Digital Signature Certificate (DSC): Often used by companies and professionals.

Steps to E-verify Using Aadhaar OTP

This is the fastest and simplest way for most taxpayers.

  1. Log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal.
  2. Go to the “e-file” menu, then “Income Tax Returns”, and select “e-verify return.”
  3. Choose the option to “e-verify using an OTP on the cellphone number registered with Aadhaar.”
  4. Confirm your Aadhaar details and generate the OTP.
  5. Enter the OTP (it’s valid for 15 minutes) and submit.

Once you’ve successfully e-verified, you’ll see a confirmation message with a Transaction ID on your screen. You’ll also get a confirmation email sent to your registered email address. This means your ITR is officially submitted and valid.
