Dina Boluarte Removed as Peruvian President

Dina Boluarte was removed from her position as President of Peru by a congressional vote on Friday, October 10, 2025, after a late-night impeachment trial. Congress cited her “permanent moral incapacity,” primarily due to her government’s failure to control a surging wave of organized crime.

She becomes the latest leader in Peru‘s long history of political instability, taking office in December 2022 after her predecessor, Pedro Castillo, was also impeached.

Causes for Her Ouster

Boluarte’s turbulent presidency ended amid mounting scandals and an unprecedented level of crime:

  • Security Crisis: The inability to address rising homicides and extortion was the final straw, leading a previously supportive right-wing coalition to turn against her.
  • Corruption Allegations: She faced investigations for illicit enrichment, including the infamous “Rolexgate” scandal involving expensive jewelry and watches, and allegedly using a presidential vehicle to transport a fugitive.
  • Human Rights Concerns: She was under investigation for the deaths of over 60 people during the deadly crackdown on protests that followed Castillo’s removal in 2022.
  • Constitutional Breach: She was accused of constitutional negligence for reportedly abandoning her post for nearly two weeks in 2023 to undergo a secret cosmetic nose surgery without notifying Congress or delegating presidential powers.

The Transition of Power

Following the vote, José Jerí Oré, the 38-year-old President of Congress, was immediately sworn in as the interim president. He is now constitutionally required to call elections and is set to serve out the remainder of the term through July 2026, with a general election scheduled for April 2026.
