The assault began Saturday evening when gunmen, believed to have emerged from the dense National Park Forest, converged on the community. For nearly three hours, the attackers operated with little resistance, resulting in:
- Indiscriminate Killings: Residents were shot as they attempted to flee. While the official police death toll stands at 30, local religious leaders suggest the count exceeds 40 victims.
- Mass Abductions: A large but unconfirmed number of villagers, including children, were forcibly taken into the forest.
- Widespread Destruction: The attackers set fire to the local market and destroyed residential homes, leaving much of the village in ruins.
A Growing Security Crisis
The village of Kasuwan-Daji is located in the Borgu local government area, a region increasingly targeted by armed groups. This latest tragedy follows a high-profile mass kidnapping of 300 students in the nearby Papiri community only two months ago.
President Bola Tinubu has characterized the attackers as terrorists fleeing military pressure in neighboring states. He has vowed that the perpetrators will be brought to justice and has ordered an immediate rescue mission for those abducted.
