Washington, D.C., recently endured one of the most violent nine-hour stretches of the year, leaving 12 people wounded in a wave of shootings across the city.
Shootings Near Howard University
The violence struck just steps from Howard University’s campus as the school hosted its homecoming celebration.
- Five people—three men, one woman, and a teenage boy—were shot in the vicinity of the university.
- None of the victims were Howard students, though one was reported to be enrolled at Morgan State University.
- Police quickly responded, arresting two 19-year-old suspects and recovering three guns in connection with the incident, though authorities believe more individuals may have been involved.
Citywide Carnage
The spree of violence began on Friday evening and continued into Saturday morning, with victims of all ages:
- A teenage girl was shot on Yuma Street SE.
- A teenage boy was struck by a bullet on 50th Street.
- In the southeast, a 5-year-old boy’s face was grazed by a bullet on Savannah Terrace.
- Other shootings involving men occurred on 16th Street NW, and Benning Road NE, with one man critically injured on Hiatt Place NW hours later.
The outbreak of crime comes despite the continued deployment of the National Guard by President Donald Trump in an effort to curb violent crime plaguing the nation’s capital. Police are continuing to search for suspects connected to the other shootings.
