Johnson & Johnson has suffered another significant legal setback, as a California jury ordered the company to pay $40 million to two women who developed ovarian cancer after decades of using its talc-based baby powder.

The Los Angeles jury found J&J negligent and determined the company knowingly failed to warn consumers about the potential health dangers. The verdict awarded $18 million to one plaintiff and $22 million to the second plaintiff (and her husband, according to court documents).

This ruling is notable as it is one of the first ovarian cancer trials to conclude since J&J’s latest attempt to resolve the multi-billion-dollar litigation through bankruptcy was dismissed. J&J, which continues to maintain its products are safe, has announced its intention to immediately appeal the verdict.
