Addressing his cheering supporters, Mamdani drew a parallel between his win and a pivotal moment in global history by quoting Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, from the famous ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech:
“A moment comes but rarely in history when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance.”
Mamdani asserted that this transformative moment had arrived for the city, declaring: “Tonight, New York has done just that.”
