Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has intensified her attack on the central government, calling the devastating North Bengal floods a “man-made disaster” caused by the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC)‘s alleged “unrestricted” and unilateral release of water from its dams. Ahead of her visit to the flood-hit areas—where at least 23 people have died—the Chief Minister announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh and a Home Guard job for the next-of-kin of the deceased. She accused the DVC of releasing water to protect Jharkhand while flooding Bengal and stated the state “doesn’t need dams.” The DVC and the Central government, however, claim the state was informed and deny the excessive discharge figures.

The state of West Bengal is grappling with a severe flood and landslide crisis in its northern districts, which has claimed at least 23 lives. The regions of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Alipurduar are among the worst hit, following over 300 mm of rainfall in 12 hours.
Concurrently, a major political row has erupted in South Bengal, where CM Mamata Banerjee has squarely blamed the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) for “unilaterally and wilfully” releasing over 1.5 lakh cusecs of water without notice during the Durga Puja festival, calling it a “deliberate ploy” to inflict disaster. The Chief Minister has since announced a compensation package of ₹5 lakh and a job for the families of those who died in the North Bengal calamity.
