In a significant legal development, the Patna High Court on September 17, 2025, ordered the Congress party to remove an AI-generated “deepfake” video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late mother from all social media platforms.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The video, which was posted by the Bihar unit of the Congress on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, showed a fictional conversation between PM Modi and a character resembling his mother, Heeraben Modi. In the clip, the AI-generated mother character criticizes her son’s political decisions, including demonetization.
The video quickly sparked a political firestorm, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) calling it “highly condemnable” and a “disgusting” insult to the late prime minister’s mother. BJP leaders accused the Congress of “crossing all limits” and lowering political discourse ahead of the Bihar assembly elections.
In response, the BJP’s Delhi Election Cell convenor, Sanket Gupta, filed an FIR against the video on September 13, alleging it “tarnished” the image of the Prime Minister and his late mother. Delhi Police have since registered a case.
The Patna High Court’s directive came after a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed, and the court also issued notices to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and various social media platforms, seeking their responses.
