The government has extended the Income Tax Return (ITR) filing deadline for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 to September 16, 2025. This is the second extension, as the original deadline was July 31, 2025.

The decision was made late on a Monday night by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) after widespread complaints of technical issues on the ITR e-filing portal, including server timeouts and slowdowns. The first extension was reportedly due to a delay in the release of income tax forms.

While the one-day extension offers some relief, many, like chartered accountant Chirag Chauhan, have called it “inadequate” and “performative,” arguing that at least five more days are needed to fix the ongoing portal issues.

The Income Tax Department acknowledged the disruption, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that the portal would be in maintenance mode from 12:00 AM to 2:30 AM on September 16, 2025.

This year’s ITR-2 form for FY 2024–25 (AY 2025–26) includes several new reporting mandates, such as:

  • Higher asset and liability thresholds (up to ₹1 crore).
  • Bifurcated capital gain schedules.
  • Updated TDS reporting codes.

Taxpayers are advised to file their returns with all necessary documentation—such as Form 16, Form 26AS, and deduction proofs—as soon as possible to avoid the last-minute rush, as the department has not indicated any further deadline relaxations.
