Patna Junction Passengers Question GST on Parking
Passengers at Patna Junction are voicing frustration over the continued levy of GST on vehicle parking charges, even after the central government announced recent tax reforms. The issue is creating tension, with travelers arguing that parking should be a basic, tax-free facility.
Here’s a breakdown of the key concerns:
- Inconsistent Rates: Parking fees vary drastically within the station itself. A two-hour four-wheeler parking spot costs Rs 50 on the Mahavir Mandir side but just Rs 25 at the Karbighaiya end.
- The “Rs 60” Problem: The GST on the Rs 50 charge brings the total to Rs 59. However, commuters allege that parking attendants routinely charge Rs 60 and refuse to return the Re 1 change, adding to the frustration of daily users.
The Bihar Daily Passengers’ Association (BDPA) is demanding the abolition of GST on all railway station parking. They argue that passengers already pay significant travel costs and that additional taxes on a basic facility are unfair. The association wants transparent pricing, free from rounding up under the pretext of tax.
In response, a senior railway official stated that the department is analyzing the new GST reforms. While future parking contracts will be updated to reflect any changes, altering existing contracts will require administrative approvals. This suggests that a quick resolution to the problem is unlikely.
