ITR Filing Deadline: Will CBDT Extend the Due Date?
The deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 is September 15, 2025. This date applies to individuals and taxpayers whose accounts are not subject to an audit. Despite this being an extended deadline, a growing number of professional bodies are urging the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) for another extension.
As of September 7, 2025, the Income Tax Department reports that only 4.89 crore ITRs have been filed, a number considered below expectations with just over a week remaining.
Why Are Professional Bodies Requesting an Extension?
Several professional and trade organizations, including the Bombay Chartered Accountants’ Society (BCAS) and the Tax Bar Association, Bhilwara, have formally requested more time. Their key concerns include:
- Delayed Forms and Utilities: Tax return utilities and forms were released late, leaving taxpayers with less time to prepare.
- Persistent Portal Glitches: Users continue to face technical issues on the e-filing portal, such as timeouts and login failures, especially during peak hours.
- Data Discrepancies: Mismatches in data across AIS, TIS, and Form 26AS are complicating the reconciliation process and requiring extra time for taxpayers to correct.
- Increased Compliance: The new formats and reporting requirements have added to the complexity of filing.
What’s the Current Status?
Despite this mounting pressure and the numerous issues raised, the CBDT has not yet made any official announcement regarding a further extension. For now, taxpayers should assume the September 15 deadline is final and plan to complete their filings on time to avoid potential penalties.
