ITR Deadline 2025: Will the CBDT extend the September 15th due date?

As of September 2, 2025, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has not officially extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26) beyond September 15, 2025.

The due date was previously extended for 45 days, from July 31 to September 15, for non-audit taxpayers (including individuals and HUFs). This initial extension was granted due to a number of issues, including delays in releasing new ITR forms and utilities.

Despite this, various tax associations, Chartered Accountants (CAs), and experts are still pushing for another extension. They argue that a further delay is necessary because of:

  • Ongoing Technical Issues: Taxpayers and professionals are still facing problems with the e-filing portal, such as slow performance, server crashes, and difficulties in uploading forms.
  • Delayed Utilities: Although some utilities were released in July, others for forms like ITR-5, 6, and 7 were only made available in August. This has left taxpayers with a very small window to complete their filings.
  • Data Mismatches: There have been reports of discrepancies between data in the Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Form 26AS, which complicates the filing process.
  • Other Challenges: Professionals have also pointed to challenges like heavy rainfall in various parts of the country and the pressure of meeting multiple deadlines, including those for tax audits.

Organizations like the Chandigarh Chartered Taxation Association (CCATAX) and the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry have formally requested the CBDT to push the deadline back, with some suggesting an extension to October 31, 2025. However, the income tax department has not yet responded to these demands.
