How to Register on the Income Tax E-Filing Portal

Navigating your first time filing an income tax return (ITR) can feel overwhelming, but the Income Tax Department has made the process simpler with a detailed guide. Before you can file, you need to register on the e-filing portal. The department shared a step-by-step video on X to walk you through it.

How to Register on the ITR Portal

Follow these steps to set up your account on the official e-filing portal:

  • Step 1: Go to the Website. Visit www.incometax.gov.in and click the ‘Register’ button in the top-right corner.
  • Step 2: Choose Your User Type. Select ‘Taxpayer’ and click ‘Continue’.
  • Step 3: Enter Your PAN. Provide your Permanent Account Number (PAN). Make sure your PAN is linked to your Aadhaar. Click ‘Validate’.
  • Step 4: Get Your OTP. You’ll receive a one-time password on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. Enter it and click ‘Continue’.
  • Step 5: Fill in Your Details. Enter your full name, date of birth, gender, and residential status, then click ‘Continue’.
  • Step 6: Add Contact Information. Provide a valid mobile number, email ID, and your complete residential address. Click ‘Continue’.
  • Step 7: Verify with OTPs. You’ll receive two separate six-digit OTPs—one for your mobile number and one for your email. Enter both to verify your contact details.
  • Step 8: Review and Confirm. Check all the information you’ve entered. If it’s correct, click ‘Confirm’.
  • Step 9: Create Your Password. Set a strong password that meets the security policy (details below) and confirm it. Also, create a personalized login message. This helps you confirm you are on the official site and not a phishing one.
  • Step 10: Complete Registration. Click ‘Register’. Your account is now created, and you will be taken to the login page.

Password Policy

When creating your new password, it must:

  • Be between 8 and 14 characters long.
  • Include both uppercase and lowercase letters.
  • Contain at least one number.
  • Have at least one special character (e.g., @, #, $, %).
