Starting today, August 1, 2025, new rules for the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system are in effect. Mandated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), these changes are designed to make your online payments smoother and more secure.

Here’s a breakdown of the key changes and how they might affect you.

Key Changes to UPI Transactions

  • Balance Checks Are Now Limited: You can now check your account balance a maximum of 50 times per day, per app. This change is meant to reduce the strain on bank servers. To make this easier, banks will now include your available balance in the confirmation message for every successful transaction.
  • Faster and More Reliable Payments: Pending transactions should now be a thing of the past. UPI apps must now display the final transaction status—either success or failure—almost instantly. All core UPI functions are also required to respond within 10 seconds, making the entire process quicker.
  • Stricter Security for New Accounts: To combat fraud, linking a new bank account to your UPI ID now requires stronger authentication.
  • Recipient Name Displayed Before You Pay: Before you confirm a payment, your app will now show the registered name of the person or business you are paying. This simple step helps prevent you from accidentally sending money to the wrong person.

How UPI Autopay Is Changing

  • Automatic Payments Now Run at Off-Peak Times: Recurring payments for things like subscriptions, bills, and EMIs will now only be processed during off-peak hours (outside of 10 AM-1 PM and 5 PM-9:30 PM). This change helps reduce congestion during the busiest parts of the day, improving the success rate of these automatic payments.
  • Dormant UPI IDs Will Be Deactivated: For security reasons, any UPI ID linked to a mobile number that has been inactive for over 12 months will be automatically deactivated. This prevents misuse if the mobile number is reassigned to a new user.

FAQs: Answering Your Questions

Q: Will I have to pay to use UPI?

A: No. These changes do not introduce any new fees. UPI remains a free service for personal use.

Q: What if I check my balance more than 50 times?

A: If you hit the daily limit, the app will block further balance checks until the next day. However, since your balance will be included with every successful transaction confirmation, you shouldn’t need to check it as often.

Q: Do I need to re-enroll for UPI Autopay?

A: No, you do not need to do anything. Your existing mandates will continue to work, and the UPI apps will automatically process the payments during the new, off-peak hours.
