UIDAI’s School Initiative: Streamlining Aadhaar Biometric Updates for 7 Crore Children

UIDAI is launching a new initiative to update children’s biometrics for Aadhaar directly through schools. This program aims to reach over 7 crore children who haven’t yet completed their mandatory biometric updates (MBU), which are crucial for maintaining accurate Aadhaar data and accessing government services.

Why is This Important?

Currently, Aadhaar for newborns and children under five years old is issued without biometric data. However, a mandatory biometric update (MBU) is required when a child turns five. A second MBU is also necessary at age 15. These updates ensure the Aadhaar system has accurate and up-to-date information.

If the MBU isn’t completed by the age of seven, a child’s Aadhaar number could be deactivated.

Key Details of the New Initiative:

  • Convenient School-Based Updates: UIDAI plans to deploy biometric machines to various districts, rotating them among schools. This will allow children to complete their biometric updates with parental consent in a familiar and convenient environment.
  • Phased Rollout: The technology for this project is currently being tested and is expected to be ready within 45-60 days, with a phased implementation to follow.
  • Free vs. Paid Updates:
    • The first MBU (between 5 and 7 years of age) is free of cost.
    • If the update is done after a child turns seven, a fee of ₹100 will be charged.
    • The second MBU (at age 15) is also free if completed between 15 and 17 years.
  • Ensuring Access to Services: Updated Aadhaar biometrics are vital for children to seamlessly access various government services and benefits, including school admissions, entrance examinations, scholarships, and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes.

UIDAI is also looking to expand this school and college-based approach for the second MBU when children turn 15, further simplifying the process for families. This initiative underscores the commitment to ensuring all children can benefit from Aadhaar-linked services without hassle.
