A 25-year-old Indian student from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, has died following a violent encounter in Fort St. John, British Columbia. The victim, Gurkirat Singh Manocha, was a student at Northern Lights College who had been living in Canada for just over a year.

On the night of March 13, 2026, local authorities were called to a boat launch near Charlie Lake. According to statements from the victim’s family and preliminary reports:
- The Dispute: An altercation reportedly broke out involving Gurkirat and a group of 10 to 12 individuals.
- The Assault: Family members allege that Gurkirat was brutally beaten before being intentionally struck and run over by a vehicle.
- Emergency Response: Despite the efforts of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and paramedics, Gurkirat succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Investigation & Official Response
- Police Inquiry: The North District Major Crimes Unit of the RCMP is treating the death as suspicious. While suspects were reportedly questioned, the investigation is currently awaiting a post-mortem examination to confirm the exact cause of death.
- Government Support: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has reached out to the grieving family in Ujjain, promising state support and coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs to expedite the return of the student’s body.
- Repatriation: The process of bringing Gurkirat back to India is expected to take approximately two to three weeks due to legal and medical formalities in Canada.
A Life Cut Short
Gurkirat was the son of an Ujjain-based businessman and was nearing the completion of his Business Management Post-Degree Diploma. He worked part-time at a local Walmart and had intended to return to India to support his family’s business after finishing his studies.
This incident has sparked renewed concern regarding the security and welfare of the Indian student community currently residing in Canada.
