Calgary Fire Department (CFD) crews arrived at the southbound lanes just before 5:00 p.m. to find a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. After a high-stakes extrication to pull the trapped driver from the wreck, the situation took a dark turn:
- Aggressive Behavior: Immediately upon being freed, the driver became verbally abusive toward their rescuers.
- Highway Mayhem: The individual fled across the median into northbound traffic, jumping onto the hoods of passing cars.
- The Assault: When a firefighter moved in to pull the individual to safety, the driver turned and attacked the responder.
The Aftermath
Fortunately, the firefighter was not injured. The driver was eventually subdued and transported to Foothills Medical Centre in serious condition. While six others were involved in the initial pile-up, no other hospitalizations were reported.
Status: Calgary Police are investigating the cause of the crash and the subsequent attack. Southbound Deerfoot Trail has since been cleared and reopened to traffic.
