Soham Murderer Ian Huntley Dies Following Prison Assault

The convicted Soham murderer, Ian Huntley, has died at the age of 52. His death follows a violent targeted attack that took place inside HMP Frankland in late February 2026.

Timeline of Events

• February 26: Huntley was brutally assaulted in a prison workshop, allegedly by another inmate using a makeshift weapon. He sustained catastrophic head injuries and was transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
• The Aftermath: Huntley was placed in a medically induced coma. Medical staff eventually determined that the damage was irreversible.
• March 7: Following the withdrawal of life support, Huntley was pronounced dead on Saturday morning.

The Investigation

Authorities have identified Anthony Russell, a fellow inmate already serving a whole-life sentence for triple murder, as the primary suspect. The incident is currently being investigated as a homicide by local police and the Prison and Probation Ombudsman.

Historical Context

Huntley was one of the UK’s most reviled prisoners, serving two life sentences for the 2002 murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman. His crimes led to the landmark Bichard Inquiry, which fundamentally changed how the UK handles police intelligence and school recruitment vetting (DBS checks).

Note: Despite several previous attempts on his life during his 22 years in custody, this final assault proved fatal.
