In one of the largest demonstrations in Minnesota’s history, tens of thousands of protesters paralyzed downtown Minneapolis on Friday, January 23. Braving life-threatening wind chills, the crowd sent a clear message to the federal government: “ICE Out of Minnesota.”

The protest wasn’t just a march; it was a total economic shutdown.
- The Strike: Over 700 businesses shuttered their doors as part of a statewide “Day of Truth and Freedom.”
- The Airport Standoff: Roughly 100 faith leaders were arrested earlier in the day at MSP International Airport after successfully blocking traffic to Terminal 1 to protest deportation flights.
- The Rally: The march culminated at the Target Center, where organizers and community leaders addressed a crowd that filled the arena to half-capacity—a feat considering the sub-zero temperatures.
The Spark: “Operation Metro Surge”
The movement gained massive momentum following the recent federal crackdown and two high-profile tragedies:
- The Death of Renee Good: The fatal shooting of this 37-year-old U.S. citizen by ICE agents on January 7 turned a local issue into a national flashpoint.
- Child Detentions: Reports of the detention of young children, specifically 5-year-old Liam Ramos, have unified labor unions, religious groups, and civic leaders against the presence of the 3,000 federal agents currently in the state.
Bottom Line: Despite the “bitter cold,” the political heat in Minnesota is at an all-time high. The protesters are demanding the immediate withdrawal of federal immigration agents and an end to “Operation Metro Surge.”
